Non-ad-funded startups will be hot in 2013 (just like 2012), but it’s not the enterprise ones we should be watching
Dan Lyons’ ReadWrite piece 2013: The Year When Things Get Real Again isn’t the first to hope that we might start to course-correct away from ad-funded app-hype. Freemium – and other models – still have plenty of mileage.
Lyons, however, confusingly, conflates ‘non-ad-funded’ with ‘enterprise’. The interesting movers in 2013 will be consumer products which abandon advertising as a primary revenue stream.
